Flora and Fauna of San Carlos

I try to join the birding group as often as possible, particularly when they stay in town.  Many of these were taken around the Esterito (little estuary) near the fishing camp in the bahia.

Great Blue Heron

Night Heron

The wonderful pelicans

Great Egret and a buddy (?) preening

Can't remember the name of this one-

This was a gilded flicker-
absolutely gorgeous colors when
you can see him in a scope.

These little guys are constant visitors at the feeder next door.

Butterflies of all kinds are everywhere down here.  And the
Monarchs still come!

The desert is beginning to show signs of spring as some of the cacti are beginning to bloom and shades of green are replacing the winter browns.

In the Algodones area near Paradisio

Yucca flowers are blooming and lighting up the desert.

I am very new to the different kinds of cactus.  This could
be barbed wire or darning needle cactus (or not!)

We need a Julie Thorpe down here to tell us the names of
all the wildflowers.

This looks like an Ocotillo flower but the plant looked
different so I don't know.  Maybe some kind of fireweed?
I didn't bring my wildflower books-darn!

Love how this grows right in the rocks at Nacapule Canyon..

There is hardly anything as beautiful as the reds and greens
in the canyons this time of year.

That's a little spring bubbling away amidst the palms
Can't imagine climbing this ladder and then scrambling
around these rocks but it must be fun for those who can.

Love all the obsidian here

Even the dead leaves are beautiful!

This is the famous Nacapule tree which means ear lobe (????)
in the native language.

I'm pretty content to just look up at the mountains.

And my men-to relax in the shade of many palms. There
are five different species of palms here.  I need to study
up on these, too.

On the way out of the canyons-a fauna of another kind! These caballeros were apparently bringing home some strays.

This young guy was bringing up the rear-he
apparently didn't want to leave the beautiful ocean view!
